  • Location: Xela, Quetzaltenango

On 17 October, Asociación Caras Alegres and Quetzaltrekkers will organise a fundraising hike to Mirador Zunil for a group of young people from the community we support in Barrio La Rosa.

Asociación Caras Alegres is a community organisation working with children, youth, women and families in local communities. Our programmes focus on education, nutrition, wellbeing and gender equality, creating opportunities for people to develop their potential and strengthen their futures.

The young people participating in the hike are Caras Alegres scholarship students, who are continuing their education with the support of our scholarship programme. They come from families in the vulnerable community where we work and are working towards completing their studies and building opportunities for a better future. Alongside their studies, many also have responsibilities within their families and communities.

The hike is an opportunity for them to step away from their usual routine and spend a day together in the mountains. At Mirador Zunil, they will have the chance to explore a different environment, enjoy the landscape, share time with one another and experience something outside their everyday school and family responsibilities.

We will depart early in the morning from the Quetzaltrekkers office to a starting point in the town of Nuevo Xetinamit. From there we will start on a tranquil hike along trails until we arrive to the mirador, an open clearing with potential views of the Lake Atitlan volcanoes and Volcán Fuego in the distance. After spending some time enjoying a snack and the views, we will walk back to transport and finish up in the Quetzaltrekkers office near midday.
