Women's Zunil - Fuentes Georginas (2 days)

- Duration: 2 Days
- Location: Xela, Quetzaltenango
We will have a girls and women’s only hike to celebrate and support female empowerment in Guatemala! Of course anyone who identifies as a woman is most welcome.
Guatemala is a country that ranks second to last concerning gender equality in Latin America (according to the United Nations Development Programme).
Girls and women are systematically excluded from education and the working market. In 2022, only 50% of Indigenous Mayan women had paying jobs, compared to 90% of men from the same social group. Most women tend to others and are involved in care and domestic work
In 2022, the literacy rate amongst rural Guatemalan women reached only 21% (Instituto Nacional de la Estadistica)
In 2025, over 50,000 children were born to mothers under the age of 19, and 2,101 of mothers were between 10-14 years old (Observatorio de Salud Reproductiva de Guatemala)
Without proper access to healthcare, the maternal mortality rate is 95 per 100,000 births in Guatemala, compared to less than 10 per 100,000 in developed countries
However, there are amazing organizations out there doing great work to change that! We want to dedicate 50% of our profits to Asociación de Mujeres del Altiplano, working with and towards empowering Indigenous women around Xela. They work as health advocates especially through traditional midwifes and create networks of women promoting social, ecological and economical change. Help us support them by joining our overnight camping adventure with some of the girls from the EDELAC Safe Home.
Trek the trail less travelled to the top of volcan Zunil, where you will camp under the stars and wake up to an unbelievable sunrise view. Finish the adventure in the hot springs of Fuentes Georginas, naturally heated by the same volcano you just summited.
